Studying in Canada as an International Student

After this, if you wish to take an educational or professional degree in Canada, you need to know that you will require a study permit for the same. This study permit will be issued to you when you arrive in Canada. International students from any part of the world cannot study or continue further until they have a valid study permit.


For the study permit, you need to have the SOP and specified documents, which will be presented to the immigration officer. If these requirements are found adequate, you will be issued the study permit.


Eligibility Criteria for a Canadian Study Visa


  1. You need to show proof of acceptance to the designated university/institution/college.

  2. You need to prove that you either have a scholarship backing up your financial needs or that your financial records can support your study plans.

  3. You will be required to do a health checkup. This will be conducted by the medical team.

  4. You need to provide evidence that you have a clean background and no criminal records.

  5. In 2021, a CLB 7 IELTS score will be necessary for Canadian immigration. That equates to at least 6.0 in each of the four bands for the test. The IELTS score criterion for all students wishing to immigrate to Canada is defined by the Canadian Language Benchmark criteria.


Documents required for the visa


1. Passport


You will be asked to present a valid passport to apply for the study permit. The duration of your studies should also cover the validity of your passport.


2. Proof of funds


As mentioned above, you need to provide details of your financial records about how you’re planning to fund your studies in Canada. Present the necessary documents if you have acquired a similar scholarship. A GIC is a type of investment available in Canada with a fixed rate of return. Several banks provide GICs.


3. Proof of Acceptance


Present the proof of your selection to the particular university/ institution/ college with the details about your course and duration of the study. It is a document or a letter that is been provided by the university to the student as a proof of acceptance.


4. English language proficiency scores


These scores are important when planning to study abroad. Draw out a plan sometime before your study abroad course and take the test whenever it fits best. Give your best and present the scores when asked.


5. Passport-size photographs


Always carry extra passport-size photographs because there is a lot of paperwork to be done before and after your course.


Apart from these requirements, check the dates for when you’re supposed to apply. You can apply online or in-person to the nearest Indian embassy or consulate.
