What

The GMAT is a standardized exam students’ use for applying to graduate business programs, such as MBA and masters’ in accountancy programs.

Many universities all around the world accept the GMAT for admission purposes.

Why

The test gives the institute the chance to assess the students’ abilities to perform in the MBA program, by testing them on all the basics of what is expected in the course.

Types of problems

The test includes writing, reasoning, numerical ability and verbal aptitude. The total duration of the test is a little over 3 hours and consists of 4 sections.

  • Analytical writing assessment- 30 minutes long and consists of an essay which will test abilities to analyze a problem and raise a prudent, supported argument.  

  • Integrated reasoning- 30 minutes long and has 12 questions which will test data analyzing skills and from it interpret results.

  • Quantitative – 62 minutes long and has 31 questions of data sufficiency and problem-solving type. Only questions of basic mathematics like algebra, geometry, arithmetic etc. are asked.

  • Verbal-65 minutes long and consists of 36 questions which test reading, comprehension, grammar and vocabulary. The questions are critical reasoning, sentence correction and reading comprehension.

More about the test

The test scores range from 200 – 800, but a good course in a highly revered institute will require a score above 700.

The student needn’t have a bachelors’ degree in business, finance or a related subject, though the information would be helpful in preparing for the exam.

The test can be registered online on the website, and the exam can be taken in the nearest centre.

There is a $250 scheduling fee.

Preparing

Whilst preparing for the test, the student should be fully aware of the current curriculum and study accordingly. Taking sample tests will help find the points of weakness and henceforth improving them. Sample tests and materials can be found online.
