Similar to the SAT and just as widely accepted, the ACT test is used for admissions to American colleges. The ACT and SAT are equally respected whilst admission processes.  The test examines the students’ proficiency in English, mathematics, science, writing and reading skills. It is for high school students who wish to send the results to universities to gain admission

About the test

  • The test is of a multiple-choice format.

  • The writing section is optional.

  • The total duration of the test is 3 hours and 35 minutes (with the writing section).

  • The maximum score obtainable is 36.

 Types of questions

  • English-Students are assessed on grammar, vocabulary and overall proficiency in English. There are 75 questions. The section tests the proper usage of English rather than rote learning. The section is allotted 45 minutes to be completed.

  • Mathematics- This section has 60 questions and 60 minutes to complete them.

The following mathematics topics are covered:

o   Pre-algebra

o   Elementary algebra

o   Intermediate algebra

o   Coordinate geometry

o   Plane geometry

o   Trigonometry

Not all calculator types are allowed. Check with the official website before bringing one to the test centre.

Details of the test:

  • Reading –This section is 35 minutes long. There are 4 sections and a total of 40 questions which will test skills to infer information from the text and hence answer questions.

  • Science-This section is also 35 minutes long and has 40 questions. Students are given passages from which they have to answer.

  • Writing section- This optional sectional consists of 1 essay and the student has 40 minutes to answer. This will assess the students’ writing abilities.

 Things to remember:

  • Students can register for the test online by visiting the official website.

  • The fees for the test are $55 and $ 70, with and without the writing section, respectively.

  • The score will also be sent to up-to 4 universities’ of the students’ choice.

  • The test scores are valid for up to 5 years.
