What is the GRE?
The GRE (graduate record examination) is a standardized test for students applying to postgraduate/masters’ programs. Though commonly asked for in universities in the USA and Canada, most universities will accept and usually recommend submitting the score to improve chances of admission.
Why GRE?
Some universities will have GRE as a mandatory requirement.
GRE is a way to improve the chances of getting into competitive colleges.
If the student hasn’t performed their best in school, they can make up for the loss by scoring well on GRE.
Types of exams
Students can opt to write either the GRE general test or one of the GRE subject tests.
GRE general test
o The test will ascertain the students’ vocabulary, numerical aptitude, analytical and critical thinking, and writing skills.
o The test is nearly 3 and a half hours long and consists of multiple-choice questions and a writing section.
o There are 6 sections of about 30 minutes, with a 1-minute break after each section (computer-based) and a 10-minute break after 3 sections.
o The test can be taken on a computer or on paper.
o The test fees are $213.
o The test can be taken up to 5 times, with a 21-day gap in between, within 12 months
GRE subject test
o There are 6 choices of subjects: biology, chemistry, physics, psychology, mathematics, literature in English.
o It is for students who already have strong expertise in the subject chosen.
o The questions are in a multiple-choice format.
o The test can only be taken on paper.
o The test fees are $150.
Preparing for the exam
o Students should prepare well in advance on the various topics covered in the exam by setting aside at least a few hours every day.
o The official website can help students find study material.
o Students should take multiple sample tests before the final test, to get a better idea on the questions and time management.
o On the day of the test, make sure to bring all the necessary documents and supplies.
There is now an option for students to send whichever score they want, out of multiple tries, to the university.
Students also have the choice of taking the test at home.
