Education counselling is a profession that is highly required especially in the world of today, where students have an array of higher education courses to pursue and an equally large number of colleges in several countries to choose from, causing mayhem in a students’ mind. Since the career consists of work alongside students who are impressionable and whose early decisions will affect their future, the profession is indispensable and highly valued.

The role of an educational counsellor is quite self-explanatory, they guide students through the different educational and career options they have and help them find what they want to pursue. An education counsellor has to cater to different needs and give prudent advice which has to be personalized to every student. They will also have to work with parents in helping them understand the best options for their child and offer them professional advice  

Becoming an educational counsellor will require degrees in education, psychology and /or counselling. After a bachelors’ degree, some experience is highly valued before proceeding to a masters’ degree. Then a license is generally required to start practicing. For becoming an educational counsellor one must have an interest and aptitude for psychology. It is also important to have good skills in interacting with people by being able to understand them, and successively helping them. It is a crucial need which can be developed with the right education and considerable practice.

The job will involve stimulating challenges that will also bring out a splendid satisfaction once those challenges are overcome. These tribulations will arise now and then, each being as unique as the other as every person has different needs and aptitudes, nevertheless, these can be overcome with careful judgement and good advice. It is a highly interesting job, as one will be faced with different situations that require different approaches.

A counsellor doesn’t tell a student what they must pursue, rather, they tell them that they should pursue what they truly want and show them the different options they can choose from. Hence an educational counsellor must be well versed with the different career opportunities, the scope for these in the future and different countries they can be pursued in. Their duty is to assist students and parents in these life-changing decisions by simply helping them to help themselves and make a decision that they are happy with.
