Japan is an island country known for its commendable products and strategies across the world. In the past decade, Japan has emerged as an option among the top ten preferences for abroad education. Japanese educational institutions are a splendid amalgamation of opportunities, research, excellence, and training. The foremost question in front of students while planning their education abroad is an arrangement of finances. 

As we all know, overseas education is an expensive affair and most of the students who drop the idea of it are the financial constraints they face. Scholarships are sumptuous blessings to students to fund their education. There are multiple scholarships offered by different institutions in Japan to international students of which some fund tuition fees while some fund living expenses and there are even scholarships that fund the whole cost. The following scholarships are the most prominent and popular among international students: 

  1. Japanese Government Scholarship for Research Student

This scholarship is for research students at the graduate school level i.e Master’s course or a Ph.D. course. The age of the student must be below 35 years. The field of education as specified by the Japanese embassy is Japan-related Humanities, Japan-related Social Science, Mathematical Science, Physics, Chemistry, and Chemical Engineering, Biology and Biotechnology, Agriculture and Fishery, etc. 

Qualifications – 

  • For the master’s course, a candidate should have a bachelor’s degree in the relevant domain with a minimum of 65% marks. 

  • For a Ph.D. course, a candidate should have a master’s degree in the relevant domain with a minimum of 65% marks. Furthermore, candidates should have practical research/teaching/work experience 

Amount of scholarship – 

  • 143,000 yen (Approx. Rs.101,418) per month for non-regular students for the duration of the course.

  • 144,000 yen (Approx. Rs.102,127) per month for regular students in Master’s course.

  • 145,000 yen (Approx. Rs.102, 836) per month for regular students in the Ph.D. course. 

  • Tuition fees are exempted. 

  1. Japanese Government Scholarship for Undergraduate Student

This scholarship is for undergraduate students in which the student must be born on or after 2 April 1997. The field of education as specified by the Japanese embassy should be any subject of Social Sciences, Humanities, and Natural Sciences. 

Qualifications – 

  • A minimum of 65% marks at 12th grade are required and priority is given to those students who have proficiency in the Japanese language. 

Number of Scholarships – 15

Amount of scholarship – 117,000 yen (Approx. Rs.82,978) per month for the duration of the course. Tuition fees are exempted. 

  1. Japanese Government Scholarship for College of Technology

This scholarship is for undergraduate students in technology studies. The student must be born on or after 2 April 1997. The field of education as specified by the Japanese embassy can be Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Information, Communication and Network Engineering, Materials Engineering, Architecture, Civil Engineering, and Maritime Engineering. 

Qualifications – 

  • A minimum of 65% marks at 12th grade are required and priority is given to those students who have proficiency in the Japanese language. 

Number of Scholarships – 15

Amount of scholarship – 117,000 yen (Approx. Rs.82,978) per month for the duration of the course. Tuition fees are exempted. 

  1. Japanese Government Scholarship for Specialised Training College Students

This scholarship is for undergraduate students leading to certificates. The student must be born on or after 2 April 1997. The field of education as specified by the Japanese embassy can be Technology, Personal Care and Nutrition, Education and Welfare, Business, Fashion and Home Economics, and Culture and General Education. 

Qualifications – Priority is given to those students who have proficiency in the Japanese language. 

Number of Scholarships – 18

Amount of scholarship – 117,000 yen (Approx. Rs.82,978) per month for three years. Tuition fees are exempted. 

  1. Japanese Government Scholarship for Specialised Training College Students

This scholarship is for undergraduate students leading to certificates. The student must be born between April 2, 1992, and April 1, 2004. The field of education as specified by the Japanese embassy should be Japanese Language and Culture. 

Qualifications – Students should be enrolled as undergraduates in the chosen universities, and have studied the Japanese language or culture for over 1 year. 

Number of Scholarships – 9

Amount of scholarship – 117,000 yen (Approx. Rs.83,000) per month for one year till October. Tuition fees are exempted. 

  1. Japanese Government Scholarship for Teacher Training Students

This scholarship is for undergraduate students leading to certificates. The age of the student must be below 35 years. The field of education as specified by the Japanese embassy is teacher training. 

Qualifications – The applicant should have work experience of a minimum of 5 years as a primary or secondary school teacher

Number of Scholarships 9

Amount of scholarship – 143,000 Yen/ month (Approx. Rs. 101,400 / month) for one and a half years from October. Tuition fees are exempted.
