Any university abroad will require some prerequisite exam grades which will differ in each case; nevertheless, most are standard and test students on basic knowledge. It is important to find out which exams are mandatory for admission and which will increase the chances of being accepted.

The following are some of the most popular entrance exams required to apply to Universities abroad:

 LANGUAGE 

TOEFL, IELTS, and PEARSON TEST OF ENGLISH are quite essential for students belonging to non-native English speaking countries. Institutes provide information regarding which one is preferred but in most cases, TOEFL is accepted in the USA and IELTS in Europe and Australia. 

 If the student decides to study in a non-English speaking country they may have to write other language tests as well which the institute shall specify.

SAT

SAT or ACT is a common standardized test that is accepted for admission with no preference over the other. SAT 1 is the standard test which most colleges require whereas SAT 2 which is subjective is optional and is specified if to be taken. Most international universities accept the SAT but the ACT is still more acceptable in the US. 

Graduate Admission Tests

GRE (Graduate Record Examinations)

The GRE is a standardized test used for admission to graduate schools. It is accepted worldwide but more commonly asked for in the USA and Canada. 

The test focuses on analytical and reasoning thinking which is essential for students pursuing higher, in-depth education. The questions test areas of basic high school mathematics, reasoning, vocabulary, and writing. It is partially multiple-choice (includes numeric entry questions) 

 It is 3 hours 45 minutes long and can be taken online. There is a $ 205 fee and has a 5-year validity. The required score for any institute and subject will vary. 

GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)

This is a standardized test for students applying to business schools testing students in areas of English and mathematics in a 4 section test lasting 3 hours.  Students are offered the exam year-round in most centers. Taking this test is important as it requires the student to excel in fields that are essential to perform substantially in the MBA course.

For Medicine

MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) 

MCAT is valuable for students looking for a future in the medical profession. It is accepted in colleges in the USA, Canada, and Australia. It is a 7 hour 30-minute long test that tests students on science, sociology, logical thinking, and reasoning. It requires a fee of $315 and is an online test and is offered multiple times a year.

IMAT (International Medical Admissions Test) 

For admission to colleges in Italy, students can apply for the IMAT which is a 100-minute test on science, mathematics, and logical reasoning. They are assessed on topics they are well familiar with and hence need not put in excess effort in preparation. The exam score is only valid for the year it has been taken.

It is important for students pursuing higher education to write different tests like these help the institutes in understanding their potential, skills, and aptitude, giving them a better insight whilst choosing among several applicants. Hence, writing all the required exams and gaining better scores will help gain an edge in the vast competition. Depending on the institutes’ requirements, the student may have to take multiple exams to meet the given requirements for studying abroad.
