It is important for school going children to be taught to control their emotions, understand others’ emotions, and maintain a generally positive outlook. They should be taught how to manage emotional difficulties as they are inevitable and not handling them well can affect personal as well as professional relations.
To integrate emotional learning into schools, students’ can be given activities that will help team building, exercises to help self-evaluation to be better connected with ones’ own feelings, and promoting communication. There can be regular discussions and fun activities that don’t seem like a bore. Students need to learn how to cope with challenges, so it may be helpful to assign responsibilities and tasks to everyone.
Students should be taught to help each other and also be wary of peer pressure and negative feelings which can bring down self-esteem. Students should help each avoid these evils and support each other. They should learn different ways to handle difficult situations as they are inevitable. Students should develop their social and personal skills as it is equally important to be comfortable with themselves as with others. Teachers should create a safe and comfortable environment where every student feels welcome so that everyone can work together. They can do this by including games and workshops in the students’ regular schedule.
It is important that students develop these skills at an early age as they are useful throughout life. Everyone deals with difficulties differently but it is important for students to learn to be optimistic and work together. The different activities they engage in should teach them the necessary skills in dealing with their own emotions in a way that is beneficial for them and those around them.
