The UCAT is accepted by several universities in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. It is used for admission to medical courses and dental programs. The test is used to assess the abilities of students who seek admission to undergraduate courses.

The test assesses the students’ aptitude and mental abilities and doesn’t primarily test academic achievements.

Types of questions-

There are 5 categories of questions:

•  Verbal reasoning – This section tests the thinking abilities of students, to be able to understand given information and subsequently answer questions.

• Decision making – Students will be given different forms of data and from that logically interpret the answers.

• Quantitative reasoning – This section tests numeric proficiency.

• Abstract reasoning – The questions in this section will test the ability to deduce a pattern amongst given information.

•  Situational judgment – students will be posed with realistic situations and asked to appropriately handle them.

Details:

• The total duration of the test is about 2 hours.

• The fees are about 120 pounds but may vary depending on the country.

• The results are available 24 hours after the test.

• The test score is valid for 1 year.

• The test can be taken multiple times but only once a year.

 Preparing

• The exam doesn’t have any specific curriculum as it tests general abilities

• Students are asked questions on mathematics (general), reading, and writing.

• Along with mental abilities, the test also seeks to understand the students’ character and to ensure it is suitable for the profession they seek to follow.

• Preparing for the test can begin with taking a practice test in exam-like conditions and therefore working on weaknesses.

• The exam is generally considered to be a hard exam as the questions may not be as direct as hoped. The major concern for students will be the time constraint and hence taking plenty of timed practise tests will help increase speed. Alongside practising each section to achieve accuracy is just as important.
